Climate Ages: Introduction
I’ve spent years reading stories written in stone. As a paleontologist and ecologist, I’ve pieced together Earth’s history from fossils, ancient pollen, and sediment layers that remember climates from millions of years ago.
But what surprised me most wasn’t the science itself. It was how hard it is to get those stories heard.
That’s why I founded Climate Ages, and why I’m so excited to join Play It Green as a guest writer. Climate Ages is a science storytelling platform built on a simple belief: when we understand, we care – and when we care, that’s when we protect.
The Challenge: Science Without Story

When Richard told me Play It Green is approaching one million plants planted – and aiming for 52 million trees, mangroves, and seakelp each year – I immediately thought about the science behind those numbers.
Every tree planted tells a story about carbon cycles perfected over millions of years. Every mangrove represents an ecosystem that has survived ice ages and rising seas. Every seakelp meadow connects to marine systems that have sustained life longer than humans have existed.
