Now, for the 2025 season, every ticket plants a tree, mangrove, or sea kelp through Play It Green, with 10% of the 50p donation for each plant passed to MIND, their chosen charity. This means festival-goers don’t just attend a show, they create lasting change.
Origins and Founding
Green Island was born out of lockdown, when George McGirr saw the potential of Hulme Community Garden Centre as a festival space. He joined forces with fellow promoter Stephan Agbogbe, and together they set out to reconnect Manchester’s communities through culture. What began as a self-financed passion project has become a fixture in the city’s creative calendar.
Ethos and Community Impact
At its heart, Green Island is more than music. It’s about connection, opportunity, and belonging. The festival runs as three one-day events each year, designed to give emerging and underrepresented artists a platform.
