Google Works On New Renewable Energy Partnership with Blackrock
Google, partnering with BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure business, is making significant strides in clean energy in Asia Pacific. They aim to add 1 gigawatt (GW) of new solar capacity to Taiwan’s electricity grid, boosting their 24/7 carbon-free energy goal. Google plans to buy 300 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to power their data centres and offices in Taiwan.
Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Data Centre Energy at Google, emphasised the challenge of reaching net-zero emissions by 2030. She states that innovative strategies are essential in regions still early in their decarbonisation journeys. BlackRock’s Global Head of Climate Infrastructure, Sabine Müller, praised the partnership, saying: “It becomes imperative to invest in clean energy as we witness growth in demand for digital services.”
This initiative builds on Google’s history of clean energy advocacy in Asia Pacific. This includes their role in amending Taiwan’s Electricity Act in 2017, allowing non-utility companies to purchase renewable energy directly. Google also plans to offer a portion of this clean energy to their semiconductor suppliers, helping reduce Scope 3 emissions.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in Google’s net-zero journey. It showcases their commitment to driving the clean energy transition in Asia Pacific. Well done to Google for these inspiring eco steps!

The Lego Group Launches New Sustainability Programme for Suppliers
The LEGO Group has launched a new Supplier Sustainability Programme to reduce carbon emissions in its supply chain. With 99% of its carbon footprint coming from suppliers, LEGO aims to cut emissions by 37% by 2032 and achieve net-zero by 2050.
Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasises the importance of collaboration, stating, “A net-zero world is simply not possible unless we find solutions that are greater than our own operations.” The programme outlines requirements for suppliers. It includes providing carbon data and setting emission reduction targets by 2026. Suppliers must improve efficiency, switch to renewable energy, and find less carbon-intensive transport methods.
Reports will be required annually, starting in 2024. Carsten Rasmussen, Chief Operations Officer, adds, “Sustainability is a license to operate and a requirement of how we do business.” LEGO will share knowledge and provide support to help suppliers meet these targets. The company has also increased spending on environmental initiatives by 60% in 2023 compared to 2022, focusing on sustainable materials and technology.

Top Team Mercedes-AMG Petronas Invests In Carbon Removals
The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has announced new investments in carbon removal initiatives, aiming to be one of the world’s most sustainable sports teams. By targeting a 75% emissions reduction by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2040, the team is taking significant steps to understand and mitigate its environmental impact.
Recently, we saw their commitment in action when they rebalanced their footprint for the British Grand Prix, which must have helped as Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes secured the win. Their focus remains on reducing emissions, but they recognise that some sectors will still have residual emissions requiring high-quality carbon removals.
The team is investing in a mix of nature-based and permanent removal initiatives to support short, medium, and long-term net-zero targets. This includes a carbon removal purchase facilitated by Frontier, involving new technologies like direct air capture and biomass sequestration. They have also committed to a soil carbon removal project in the UK to compensate for residual emissions.

Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability at Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, stated, “Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, both on and off the track.”
These efforts highlight their commitment to pioneering solutions and driving broader change in sustainability. Well done to Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team for taking these inspiring eco steps.
