Cadbury Launches Paper Tubs in UK First Packaging Trial
Cadbury has unveiled 300,000 Heroes tubs made from paper, replacing the familiar plastic versions in a UK first trial across Tesco stores.
Developed with DS Smith, the new recyclable packaging aims to cut plastic waste and test consumer response. Shoppers can scan a QR code under the lid to share feedback, helping shape future designs.
This is the latest move by Cadbury’s parent company Mondelēz International, which is reducing virgin plastic use by 5% by the end of 2025. Last year, it introduced 80% recycled plastic wrappers across 300 million chocolate bars, cutting 600 tonnes of waste annually.
Mondelēz’s sustainability lead Joanna Dias called the move “an important step toward our long term packaging ambitions.” DS Smith’s UK managing director Paul Clarke added that the partnership shows how sustainable design can “cut waste without compromising quality or branding.”

Renewables Overtake Coal as World’s Biggest Power Source
In a historic first, renewable energy overtook coal as the world’s largest source of electricity in the first half of 2025, according to data from Ember.
Driven by booming solar and wind generation, renewables met 100% of new global electricity demand and even caused a small decline in fossil fuel use. Solar power led the way, accounting for 83% of global electricity growth and now dominating new capacity in developing countries.
While China added more clean energy capacity than the rest of the world combined, nations like India and Kenya also achieved record gains.
As Ember analyst Malgorzata Wiatros Motyka put it, this marks “the beginning of a shift where clean power is keeping pace with demand growth.”
