Clean Energy Closing in on Fossil Fuels
A new global report shows clean technologies could replace three quarters of fossil fuel demand. The analysis comes from We Mean Business Coalition, Energy Transitions Commission, Ember and E3G.
Investment flows tell the story. Renewables now receive twice the capital that fossil fuels attract. Solar has become the fastest growing energy source in history, with renewables already producing more than 40 percent of global power, with the capacity to reach 75%.
Electrification is reshaping energy use across sectors. Electric vehicles now make up 22 percent of worldwide car sales, cutting demand for more than 1.3 million barrels of oil each day. By 2030 that figure could reach five million barrels.
Maria Mendiluce of We Mean Business said: “The smart move now is to double down on clean energy. It is where growth, jobs and competitiveness lie.”
The report warns that coal, oil and gas face structural risks as electrification accelerates. For business and policymakers, the message is clear. The transition is not approaching, it is already happening.
UK Pledges £448m for Low Carbon Shipping
The UK Government has committed £448 million to maritime decarbonisation. The funding comes through the UK SHORE programme and supports projects including electric vessels, charging points at ports and new green fuels.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the investment will “supercharge growth and jobs in coastal towns and cities, making the UK one of the best places in the world to invest”.
So far more than 200 projects have benefitted, from scientific research to large scale commercial trials. The latest round is expected to unlock an additional £700 million in private investment. Ports at Liverpool, Tyne, Hunterston and Great Yarmouth will see hundreds of millions in modernisation and clean infrastructure.
Shipping accounts for about 20 percent of UK domestic transport emissions. Decarbonising the sector is critical for climate goals, trade resilience and energy security. With shore side power and green fuels moving into practice, shipping is finally charting a new course.
Plastic Waste Turned into Carbon Capture Material
Chemists at the University of Copenhagen have discovered how to transform PET plastic waste into a material that captures carbon. They have named it BAETA.
This new material absorbs CO2 at normal room temperature and even higher. Once saturated, the CO2 can be released with heat, collected, and then stored or reused. The method is energy friendly and scalable, making it suitable for industrial plants.
Lead researcher Margarita Poderyte explained: “By turning waste into a raw material that actively reduces greenhouse gases, we make an environmental issue part of the solution to the climate crisis.”
The technology does not compete with recycling. It uses low quality or decomposed plastic that is often ignored by recyclers. That means it could both reduce plastic pollution and fight climate change.
