Progress has followed. Liverpool has cut carbon emissions by 15 per cent against a 2019 baseline through renewable electricity procurement, HVO fuel for team buses, and sustainable aviation fuel for domestic flights. Nature projects have added more than 1,000 trees and hedges around club sites and introduced 60,000 bees into local green spaces.
Impact Director Rishi Jain credits success to leadership buy-in and shared accountability. Sustainability objectives sit across finance, operations, facilities, and communications teams, rather than being centralised. That approach extends to fans, with a 96 per cent plastic bottle collection rate at Anfield and redesigned packaging avoiding around 350,000 plastic bottles each year.
Sustainability Careers Hold Firm as UK Hiring Slows
Sustainability-linked roles are proving resilient in the UK labour market, even as overall hiring remains subdued. Data from Indeed’s Opportunity Index for 2026 shows continued demand for clean energy, retrofit, and environmental roles.
This contrasts with the wider picture. Office for National Statistics figures show vacancies fell year on year across most sectors in late 2025, with competition rising to 2.5 unemployed people per vacancy. Despite this slowdown, sustainability roles continue to appear across construction, infrastructure, skilled trades, and specialist professional services.
Roles such as renewable energy engineer and low-carbon heating installer reflect rising investment and tighter regulation. Sustainability is no longer treated as a niche career path and is increasingly embedded across mainstream employment.
Policy is reinforcing this trend. The UK Government has committed to sourcing 95 per cent of electricity from low-carbon sources by 2030. Its Clean Energy Jobs Plan identifies 31 priority occupations, supported by funding for apprenticeships, higher education, and five new Clean Energy Technical Excellence Colleges.
Government projections suggest clean energy industries could support up to 860,000 jobs by 2030. The challenge now is skills and quality, ensuring training keeps pace with demand and builds public confidence.
Wind and Solar Overtake Fossil Fuels Across the EU
For the first time on record, wind and solar have overtaken fossil fuels in the European Union’s electricity mix. According to the latest European Electricity Review from Ember, wind and solar supplied 30 per cent of EU electricity in 2025, compared with 29 per cent from fossil fuels.
In 14 of the EU’s 27 member states, wind and solar now generate more power than all fossil fuels combined. The Netherlands and Croatia reached this milestone for the first time, driven by strong growth in solar and wind generation. Coal continued its long decline, falling to just 9.2 per cent of the EU’s power mix.
Solar was the main driver of change. Generation rose by 20 per cent in 2025, adding 62 terawatt hours, roughly equivalent to the output of three large nuclear reactors. Total solar generation has more than doubled since 2020.
Renewables supplied 48 per cent of EU electricity overall, supported by rapid growth in battery storage. Large-scale battery capacity exceeded 10 gigawatts in 2025, helping integrate variable renewables and stabilise prices.
