The technology stores energy by using grid power to compress CO₂ when electricity is plentiful. When power is needed, the CO₂ expands through a turbine and sends electricity back to the grid. It sounds a bit sci-fi, yet the point is practical: store clean power when supply is high, then release it when the grid needs support.
The project is expected to come online in 2028. It sits near high-voltage lines serving the Greater Dublin area and close to renewable energy resources that can face curtailment. Storing energy locally can help ease grid congestion and make better use of wind and solar power.
