Waitrose Invests £1 Million to Scale Regenerative Farming

Our first story of Inspiring Sustainability News for November 24th sees Waitrose investing £1 million in two major partnerships designed to accelerate British farming’s shift to regenerative practices.

Working with the Soil Association Exchange and Regenified, Waitrose will help farmers gather clear data, achieve certification, and access expert advice to make nature-friendly methods more viable.

Over four years, early-adopter farms will be assessed across soil health, biodiversity, water, carbon, animal welfare, and social impact. The results will create a unified evidence base for both environmental and commercial benefits.

Soil Association Exchange CEO Joseph Gridley said: “Farmers want to do the right thing for nature and their businesses, but they need clear evidence, trusted advice, and fair reward.”

Regenified’s Salar Shermani added that Waitrose’s funding will enable 100 farms to secure independent regenerative certification, the first UK retailer to offer this at scale.

By 2030, Waitrose aims for all 2,000 of its UK suppliers to use regenerative methods. As Andrew Hoad, director of Leckford Estate, put it, producing good food and protecting the planet “go hand in hand.”

This approach could make British farming both more resilient and more rewarding for those who feed the nation.

Public EV Charging Points Surge 23% Across the UK

Our next Sustainability News for November 24th shows that the UK’s public electric-vehicle charging network has grown by an impressive 23 per cent in a single year, according to new government figures.

More than 15,000 new charge points have been added since October 2024, bringing the national total to 86,021. Of these, over 17,000 are rapid or ultra-rapid chargers capable of topping up most cars to 80 per cent within 40 minutes.

Growth is strongest in Yorkshire, Wales, and the West Midlands. England outside London saw a 23.4 per cent rise, helped by the government’s £381 million fund for 100,000 more charge points and a £25 million support programme for councils assisting residents without driveways.

The Department for Transport has also announced proposals to make home charging simpler and cheaper. The plan would remove the need for planning permission for cross-pavement gullies and allow renters to install charging points more easily.

Officials estimate that with access to domestic electricity rates, running an EV could soon cost just 2 pence per mile, around £2.50 for London to Birmingham.

Combined with new pricing rules and reliability standards, the expansion makes electric driving practical for millions. Clean transport is no longer the future; it’s becoming the everyday reality.

Danone Launches ‘Milk Academy’ to Train Farmers in Sustainability

Our final Sustainability News for November 24th sees food giant Danone launch its Milk Academy, giving dairy farmers accredited training and digital resources to improve environmental and business resilience.

The programme is backed by Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands and Cornell University in the US, combining classroom and online learning.

Training covers regenerative agriculture, efficient manure management, feed and soil optimisation, methane reduction, herd productivity, and long-term farm planning.

Chief Operating Officer Vikram Agarwal said, “We’re committed to giving our farmer community unparalleled access to the knowledge, expertise and tools that will make their businesses more agile and resilient.”

Danone has already cut methane from fresh milk by over 25 per cent since 2020 and aims for a 30 per cent reduction by 2030, part of its net-zero strategy. Dairy farming accounts for around 2.5 per cent of global greenhouse-gas emissions, so scaling best practice could have a major global impact.

By turning expertise into action, the Milk Academy shows how large companies can empower suppliers and drive sustainability through their entire value chain.
