Sustainability News for May 25th: Introduction
The Sustainability News for May 25th brings together three stories showing how sustainability is moving into finance, sport and everyday consumer behaviour.
For the Play It Green community, this week feels nicely practical. We have major backing for carbon removal, a new ambition for greener sport, and a clearer path for the UK’s Deposit Return Scheme. It is sustainability with fewer slogans and more moving parts. Always a relief.
From degraded land in the US to Olympic training environments and drink containers in our hands, these stories show that progress is becoming easier to see, use, and measure.

Octopus Energy Generation Signs $500m Carbon Removal Deal
Octopus Energy Generation has signed a $500m deal with US-based Living Carbon to support carbon removal through afforestation and reforestation. The projects will focus on degraded land in the United States, including abandoned mining sites and farmland that may not recover naturally. The aim is to remove up to 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over 40 years.

Octopus has made a further $13m commitment into Living Carbon’s carbon removal development business. The deal supports Octopus Energy Generation’s wider goal to invest $2bn into US clean energy projects by 2030. Living Carbon says it is targeting more than 130 million acres of degraded land with potential for native tree planting.
The deal matters because carbon removal is starting to attract long-term project finance, rather than relying on small pilots and nice-looking announcements. That brings real opportunity, but it also demands credibility. Nature-based carbon removal must be measured properly, protect communities and never become a lazy excuse to avoid cutting emissions first.
UK Sport Announces New Net-Positive Ambition for 2040
UK Sport has announced a new ambition to deliver net-positive environmental impact by 2040. This builds on its 2023 sustainability strategy and reflects growing concern about climate change affecting sport. The organisation says it has already halved travel emissions and cut domestic flights by 80 per cent

It has supported more than 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports to create their own sustainability plans. Environmental standards are now being built into major events and supplier requirements. UK Sport will work with Home Country Sports Councils, Team GB and ParalympicsGB to create more consistent environmental action across high-performance sport.
This is significant because sport depends on healthy places, safe conditions and reliable seasons. Heat, flooding, poor air quality and melting snow can all affect training and competition. UK Sport’s research found that 69 per cent of 11 to 15-year-olds want national sports organisations to protect the environment. That gives sport a huge chance to make sustainability feel normal, visible and shared.
UK Deposit Return Scheme Set at 20p for All Containers
Our final story of Sustainability News for May 25th sees the UK’s Deposit Return Scheme move a step closer, with a flat 20p deposit confirmed for all eligible containers. The scheme is due to launch in October 2027 across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It will apply to single-use drinks containers made from PET plastic, steel and aluminium, from 150ml to three litres.

Consumers will pay the 20p deposit when buying a drink and receive it back after returning the container. Exchange for Change tested deposit levels from 10p to 30p before settling on 20p. Its analysis found that 15p was too low to drive returns, while 30p risked putting too much upfront cost on shoppers.
After years of delay, this clarity is useful for retailers, producers and return operators. Deposit return schemes already work in more than 50 countries, with European schemes averaging a 90 per cent return rate. If the UK gets this right, it can cut litter, improve recycling quality and make circular economy behaviour feel like a normal part of daily life.

Sustainability News for May 25th: Wrap-Up
The Sustainability News for May 25th shows progress taking shape through better finance, stronger leadership and smarter systems. Octopus Energy Generation is putting serious money behind carbon removal. UK Sport is linking environmental protection with performance. The Deposit Return Scheme is giving businesses and consumers a clearer route to better recycling.
For the Play It Green community, the thread running through all three stories is practical action. Sustainability works best when it becomes part of how people invest, compete, buy, return, measure and improve. That is where confidence grows. That is where better habits stick. Let’s keep making progress feel useful, credible and worth backing.
