Licensed Trade Charity: Introduction

We’re thrilled to welcome the Licensed Trade Charity to the Play It Green community as our newest Giving Partner!

For over 230 years, the Licensed Trade Charity has provided vital support to people working in the UK’s pubs, bars, breweries, and drinks industry. From mental health and wellbeing services to housing, education, and financial support, they help people when life gets tough, past or present.

By becoming a Giving Partner, the Licensed Trade Charity will receive 10% of any revenue a partner that nominates the gives us. Plus they get sustainability support and education for their team.

We recently caught up with Joby Mortimer, Director of Charity Operations, to learn more about the charity’s work, why sustainability matters to them, and what they hope to achieve through this partnership.

Please, tell us a little about the Licensed Trade Charity.

The Licensed Trade Charity (LTC) is a UK-based registered charity dedicated to supporting individuals who work or have worked in the licensed drinks trade, including pubs, bars, breweries, and related sectors. Established in 1793 and granted a royal charter in 1836, the charity has a long history of providing assistance to those in need within the industry

Services and Support

The LTC offers a range of free services to help individuals facing challenges:

  • 24/7 Helpline: A confidential support line available around the clock, offering emotional support, financial advice, and practical guidance.
  • Financial Grants: Means-tested grants of up to £5,000 to assist with expenses such as rent arrears, household bills, or school uniforms.
  • Specialist Advice: Access to trained counsellors and specialists for support with mental health, housing issues, and other personal concerns
  • Educational Support: The charity operates three independent schools, Licensed Victuallers’ School near Ascot, LVS Hassocks, and LVS Oxford, catering to children from the licensed trade community, including those with learning difficulties

Recent Initiatives

In response to the challenges faced by the hospitality sector, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the LTC launched the “Because Everyone Needs a Little TLC” campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the charity’s services and encourage individuals to seek support early to prevent issues from escalating

Additionally, the LTC has developed a digital platform offering financial wellbeing tools, including a benefits calculator and bill comparison resources, to assist those in the industry with managing their finances.

Why is sustainability important to the Licensed Trade Charity?

Sustainability supports the LTC’s mission to provide long-term help to people in the drinks trade. It ensures services like grants, education, and mental health support stay available now and in the future.

It also makes the charity more appealing to funders, donors, and partners who prioritise environmental and social responsibility. This strengthens support and brings in values-aligned backers.

By cutting waste and improving energy use, the LTC reduces costs. These savings go straight back into core services, helping more people.

Finally, acting sustainably boosts trust. It shows the charity is responsible, forward-thinking, and serious about its impact on people and the planet.

Why did the Licensed Trade Charity decide to collaborate with Play It Green?

The team at Play It Green are doing amazing things in rebuilding the planet. The LTC garden is something we’re hugely proud of and can’t wait to see it flourish as operators sign up to the initiative. For just £1 (optional) on your bill, consumers can make a huge difference, planting two trees, mangroves and sea kelp and regiving 10% to us. It aligns so well with the LTC, with both parties giving back for the benefit of society.

What does the future hold for the Licensed Trade Charity?

We are on a mission to ‘Transform Lives and Unleash Potential’. We do that through helping people to be the best version of themselves with our support.
But we can do more, with awareness at 49%, we want to reach more people, so for us, it’s simple, we want to:

  • Raise Awareness
  • Raise Funds
  • Help More People
