Our Nature Repair Report for January 2025 marks a new chapter in our journey to repair the planet, celebrate achievements, and look forward to an ambitious year ahead. From planting trees, mangroves and sea kelp to creating sustainable livelihoods, this month’s report is packed with updates that highlight the tangible impact of your support.
Since we partnered with Veritree last year our impact has grown significantly and our transparency has growth with it. We also now have an ambitious plan to expand to Brazil and Tanzania this year, and with the milestone of 750,000 trees, mangroves and sea kelp in touching distance, our collective achievements are more inspiring than ever.
Kenya: Mangrove Restoration and Coastal Resilience
In Kenya, our mangrove restoration projects are transforming coastlines and communities alike, whilst, stabilising soil and reducing coastal erosion. These forests act as natural barriers against storm surges and flooding, while also sequestering carbon to combat climate change. Beyond their environmental benefits, mangroves create thriving habitats for marine biodiversity, supporting fish, crabs, and migratory birds. The ripple effects extend to local fishing industries, where healthier ecosystems mean improved fish stocks and economic stability for communities.
The video above is a recap of a recent trip to the Kwale region of Kenya to visit the planting projects. Whilst there new drone monitoring and 3D imaging technology was tested. This technology, along with the blockchain means that our whole planting ‘supply chain’ is completely transparent and provable!
Our commitment to empowering women is particularly evident here, with over 50% of the planting workforce consisting of women. These women are not just planters but leaders, driving sustainable practices and advocating for environmental stewardship. By integrating advanced technologies like soil sensors and bioacoustic monitors, we’re able to track progress with precision, ensuring these ecosystems continue to flourish for generations.
Senegal: Agroforestry for Sustainable Livelihoods
Our agroforestry projects in Senegal represent a powerful blend of ecological restoration and community empowerment. In 2024, tens of thousands of hectares of degraded land were reforested with native tree species, revitalising soil health and improving water retention. This restoration effort has significantly reduced the risk of desertification, transforming barren landscapes into productive land that supports both biodiversity and agriculture. Local farmers are now able to grow crops alongside these trees, creating a reliable source of income and food security.
One of the standout successes of this initiative is the introduction of honey production, supported by hundreds of deployed beehives. These beehives not only bolster pollinator populations but also provide an additional revenue stream for families. Women play a central role in these efforts, taking on leadership positions and ensuring the long-term success of the projects. Through innovative tools like LiDAR drones and on-the-ground monitoring, we’ve established a scalable model for sustainable agroforestry that could benefit regions facing similar challenges.
Canada: Kelp Forests and Indigenous Empowerment
Off the coast of Canada, our sea kelp restoration projects are revitalising marine ecosystems while addressing critical climate challenges. Kelp forests, known as the “lungs of the ocean,” absorb carbon dioxide at remarkable rates, helping to mitigate the effects of global warming. These underwater forests provide shelter and food for a wide variety of marine species, from fish to sea otters, supporting biodiversity and bolstering fisheries.
In partnership with Indigenous communities, this work integrates traditional ecological knowledge with cutting-edge restoration techniques. Indigenous leaders are key collaborators, contributing invaluable insights into the ecosystems they have stewarded for generations. This partnership not only strengthens cultural connections to the land but also provides leadership and economic opportunities, such as jobs in kelp farming and sustainable fisheries. Advanced monitoring technologies, including bioacoustic sensors and water-quality trackers, ensure these ecosystems thrive, while demonstrating the scalability of marine restoration. Together, these efforts inspire hope for oceans worldwide.
What the Future Holds
2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Play It Green. Our planned expansion into Brazil will tackle deforestation in some of the world’s most critical rainforests, while projects in Tanzania will focus on reforesting the Sawle Lake area to support biodiversity and local livelihoods.
We’re also embracing cutting-edge technologies, such as LiDAR and bioacoustic monitoring, to enhance the precision and impact of our restoration efforts. And for the first time, some of our members will have the opportunity to visit project sites, witnessing firsthand the transformation their support makes possible.
