Nature Repair for October 2024: Introduction
At Play It Green, we’re thrilled to present our Nature Repair Report for October 2024. The report highlights the incredible progress we’ve made together in repairing our planet. Every month, we bring you updates so you can see the amazing impact you’re helping to create.
This month’s Nature Repair Update showcases our projects in East Africa, Senegal, and Canada. We are also excited to bring you exciting news about our upcoming expansions into Tanzania and Brazil.
Restoring Mangrove Forests in East Africa
In our ongoing efforts featured in the Nature Repair Report for October 2024, we are restoring the mangrove forests along the East African coast. Coastal communities here depend on mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihood, and nutrition.
Unfortunately, rapid urbanisation and ineffective governance have led to overexploitation and destruction of these vital forests.
With your support, we are empowering these coastal communities to break the cycle of poverty through environmental restoration.
By replanting mangrove estuaries rich in biodiversity, we’re re-establishing fishing grounds. Not only that but we are creating additional income streams through sustainable harvesting.
The restored mangrove forests also stabilise coastlines, acting as a vital defence during tropical storms. They also protect both the land and the communities.
Reviving Degraded Lands in Senegal through Agroforestry
Our Nature Repair Report for October 2024 also highlights our collaborative efforts in Senegal. Here we’re working with veritree and Mother Trees to restore degraded land through sustainable farming.
The conventional crop intensification model—particularly peanut monocropping—has jeopardised livelihoods. It has also degraded soils, reduced biodiversity, and aggravated the effects of climate change.
Our program seeks to restore as much of the 30,000 hectares of degraded land surrounding the Ndankou and Patte Forests as possible. We are starting with 6,000 farming families, each rehabilitating one hectare.
By implementing sustainable practices and promoting community ownership, we’re contributing to the long-term richness and sustainability of the Gambia River Watershed.
Restoring Pacific Coast Kelp Forests in Canada
Another key focus in our Nature Repair Report for October 2024 is our work in Canada. We’re collaborating with veritree, Coastal Kelp, and the Sechelt First Nations to restore kelp forests along the Pacific West Coast of British Columbia.
Kelp holds immense cultural and ecological significance for Indigenous communities. It provides food, medicine, and materials for crafts and ceremonies.
Globally, over 40% of kelp forests have declined due to climate change, overexploitation, and pollution. Our project employs innovative techniques to seed bull kelp and sugar kelp. This produces millions of kelp sporophytes planted on lines and green gravel in Indigenous waters.
Restoring these underwater forests supports biodiversity, coastal fisheries, and the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities. It also enhances the ocean’s capacity to act as a significant carbon sink.
Ensuring Transparency Through Verified Impact
At Play It Green, transparency and accountability are paramount. Our rigorous process ensures every contribution you make has a real and measurable impact:
- Project Management: Our tree planting partners manage their restorative projects using our technology platform, overseeing site management, user management, and data collection requirements.
- Data Collection: In collaboration with our partners, we gather data and evidence throughout each project’s lifecycle, including ground-level monitoring and remote sensor technology.
- Verification: We measure the collected data against established standards, ensuring it’s complete, consistent, and accurate. This verifies that trees aren’t double-counted and that each one is incremental.
- Publishing: Once verified, the impact data is published to a public blockchain, enforcing traceability and transparency, and ensuring the data remains unaltered.
Expanding Our Reach: Tanzania and Brazil
We’re also excited to announce that we’ll soon be expanding our nature repair initiatives into Tanzania and Brazil. In Tanzania, we’ll focus on reforestation and sustainable land management practices that support local communities and protect biodiversity. In Brazil, our efforts will concentrate on restoring parts of the Amazon rainforest, one of the most critical ecosystems on the planet. More news on these exciting developments will be coming soon.

- Trees Planted: Together, we’ve planted nearly 700,000 trees across our project sites.
- Mangroves Restored: We’ve rejuvenated extensive areas of mangrove forests in East Africa.
- Kelp Forests Rejuvenated: In Canada, we’ve planted millions of kelp sporophytes, revitalising vital underwater ecosystems.
- CO₂ Sequestered: Our combined efforts have sequestered close to 55,000 tonnes of CO₂, significantly contributing to the fight against climate change.
Every tree, mangrove, and kelp planted makes a difference. They absorb carbon dioxide, provide habitats for wildlife, protect against natural disasters, and support local communities.
