At Play It Green, we are on the brink of a historic milestone. Together, our community of people and businesses is about to reach one million trees, mangroves, and sea kelp planted through our global restoration network. Each one represents hope, action, and measurable impact.
Innovative Monitoring: AI and Science Driving Transparency
Our partner veritree has launched two major advancements that are changing the way restoration is verified. The first is an AI survivability solution that analyses field images of mangrove seedlings during their first three years of growth. This is the period when survival rates matter most. Using veritree’s mobile Collect App, trained field teams capture images and classify each tree as alive, dormant, or dead. The data builds a real-time survival map that helps identify where replanting or care is needed.
The second breakthrough is a peer-reviewed blue carbon model, published in Ecological Indicators. It measures carbon storage at the level of individual trees with remarkable accuracy. In trials near Mombasa, drones surveyed 759 young mangroves and, through advanced machine learning, calculated the carbon stored by each tree to within about two kilograms.
By combining drone imagery, field measurements, and AI analysis, veritree has created a transparent system that tracks restoration from planting to maturity. This means every mangrove supported by Play It Green members can be verified, measured, and trusted as a genuine contribution to climate action.
Environmental Impact: Strengthening Coastal Ecosystems
Mangrove restoration in Kenya is one of the most effective ways to capture carbon and protect coastlines. A single hectare of mangroves can store up to 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents, around three times more than inland tropical forests. Our projects in Kwale and Kilifi are helping to restore these natural carbon stores while strengthening coastal protection.
Healthy mangrove forests act as living barriers, reducing wave height by up to 66 per cent before it reaches the shore. This helps protect homes and livelihoods from erosion, flooding, and storm surges, which are becoming more frequent as the climate changes. The dense root systems stabilise soil, filter seawater, and create safe habitats for fish, crabs, and birds.
Since Play It Green’s mangrove restoration began, biodiversity surveys have recorded higher fish counts and the return of species that had disappeared for years. The forests are breathing life back into the estuaries, improving water quality and creating a cycle of resilience that benefits both nature and people. Each restored hectare becomes a living carbon store and a shield for coastal communities.
Social Impact: Restoring Livelihoods and Empowering Communities
The mangrove restoration work in Kwale and Kilifi is about more than environmental recovery. It is about people. These projects are providing stable, year-round employment, with more than half of nursery and planting roles now filled by women.
Healthy mangroves mean stronger fisheries, and that means reliable food and income for local families. As new mangrove roots take hold, fish and shellfish populations grow, helping to improve nutrition and reduce reliance on unsustainable practices. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle of better ecosystems and better living standards.
Our partners at the EarthLungs Reforestation Foundation work closely with veritree and local communities to ensure that mangrove restoration in Kenya is locally led. Training in nursery management, data collection, and monitoring gives residents practical skills in environmental science and sustainable land management. It is a model of empowerment that builds long-term stability.
