The Benefits of Sea Kelp: Introduction
At Play It Green, we’re delighted to bring you September’s Nature Repair Report, shining a light on the benefits of sea kelp. With your support, our global projects are weeks away the remarkable milestone of one million trees, mangroves, and sea kelp restored.
This month, we focus on the Sunshine Coast of Canada, where kelp restoration is delivering ecological, climate, and social benefits that ripple far beyond the shoreline.

Sea Kelp: A Lifeline for Biodiversity
Sea kelp forests are often called underwater rainforests, and for good reason. They provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for countless marine creatures. On the Sunshine Coast, restored kelp beds are already supporting juvenile salmon, shellfish, and sea otters, which weave themselves into the protective canopy. Rockfish populations are returning too, boosting food security and income for coastal communities.

The benefits of sea kelp here go beyond individual species. When kelp thrives, the entire marine web is strengthened. Seabirds feed more easily, fisheries become more stable, and habitats that were once in decline are revitalised. Every strand of kelp seeded by the Play It Green community is helping to rebuild balance and resilience in ocean ecosystems.
Carbon Absorption and Seawater Repair
One of the greatest benefits of sea kelp is its ability to capture carbon. Kelp is among the fastest-growing plants on Earth, capable of reaching more than half a metre of growth in a single day. This rapid growth means it can absorb carbon dioxide up to 20 times more efficiently than land-based forests. Each line of kelp seeded on the Sunshine Coast acts as a powerful natural carbon sink, locking away emissions that drive climate change.
Kelp also improves seawater health. By absorbing excess nitrogen and phosphorus, it reduces the risk of harmful algal blooms. Its presence lowers local acidity levels, helping counteract the growing challenge of ocean acidification. And as it photosynthesises, kelp produces oxygen, enriching the water and sustaining marine life. These benefits of sea kelp are crucial for oceans under increasing stress, making kelp restoration one of the most effective nature repair strategies we have.
Social Impact: Strengthening First Nations Partnerships
Our work in Canada is not only about restoring ecosystems, it is also about building partnerships. On the Sunshine Coast, we collaborate with the Sechelt First Nation and other Indigenous groups who bring generations of traditional knowledge to the restoration process. For these communities, kelp is deeply cultural. It provides food, medicine, and materials, and holds spiritual significance.
By supporting kelp restoration, the Play It Green community is also creating jobs, particularly for young people trained in marine conservation. The project combines cultural heritage with scientific innovation, strengthening resilience while providing economic opportunity. One Sechelt elder described the project as “healing for the water and healing for our people.” That powerful statement captures how the benefits of sea kelp reach beyond ecology, they support community pride, cultural renewal, and long-term sustainability.
Our Collective Impact
Thanks to your support, we are only weeks away from planting our one millionth tree, mangrove, or sea kelp. That number is more than a statistic. It represents healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and a global movement to repair the planet. Alongside kelp restoration in Canada, we continue planting mangroves in Kenya and agroforestry trees in Senegal, delivering food security, employment, and environmental resilience.

Each project is monitored with science and technology, from blockchain records to bio-acoustic sensors. This ensures transparency, accountability, and trust in the impact you’re creating. The road to one million is nearly complete, but the journey of repairing nature is only just beginning.

The Benefits of Sea Kelp: Wrap-Up
This month’s focus on the benefits of sea kelp highlights why our community’s work matters so deeply. By restoring these underwater forests, we are protecting biodiversity, absorbing carbon, repairing seawater, and supporting First Nations communities. The Play It Green community is showing what’s possible when action is rooted in care for people and planet.
As we prepare to celebrate one million plants restored, let’s remember that every contribution, whether a tree in Senegal, a mangrove in Kenya, or a kelp line in Canada, brings us closer to a greener, healthier world. Together, we’re proving that nature repair done right delivers benefits that last for generations.
