Ofgem Plots a Clean Power Grid for 2030
The UK’s energy regulator Ofgem has unveiled a new investment framework that could reshape how we power our lives. Dubbed ED3, this next-phase electricity distribution plan promises to supercharge Britain’s transition to clean power between 2028 and 2033.
Ofgem’s blueprint calls for proactive investment in local electricity networks. That means planning ahead to connect more electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, solar farms, and even data centres, all without the usual delays and red tape. With 800,000 km of cables set for upgrades, this is the biggest grid expansion in decades.
“We must take a new strategic regulatory approach,” said Steve McMahon from Ofgem. “This is our most consequential price control yet.”
The ED3 framework focuses on smart digital infrastructure, resilience against cyber threats and climate impacts, and holding electricity companies accountable for their promises. It also builds in new funding mechanisms for clean tech connections and vulnerable customers.

China’s Emissions Fall for the Right Reasons
For the first time, China’s CO₂ emissions are shrinking due to renewables, not recessions. According to Carbon Brief, emissions fell by 1.6% year-on-year in Q1 2025 and by 1% over the past 12 months. This decline is primarily driven by a 2% reduction in power-sector emissions, thanks to a rapid expansion in wind, solar, and nuclear energy.
In Q1 alone, China added 74 gigawatts of clean energy, more than most countries manage in a year, bringing its total capacity to 1,482 GW. For the first time ever, renewables overtook fossil fuels in installed capacity, eclipsing the 1,451 GW of thermal power. This has created a structural shift: clean energy is not only meeting demand but outpacing it.
However, it’s not all clear skies yet. Coal use in industrial sectors like chemicals remains stubbornly high, and emissions outside the power sector continue to rise. With its next five-year plan looming, China’s policy direction will be crucial. But for now, lets focus on the positive Sustainability News for 16th June. Thanks to strong demand and incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, the US energy market is seeing explosive clean growth. Over 32 GW of utility-scale solar and nearly 8 GW of wind are forecasted for the year, alongside a whopping 18 GW of new battery storage. These additions are boosting grid flexibility and bringing down costs.
Yet politics could slow the surge. A new bill backed by House Republicans aims to scrap renewable tax credits, jeopardising $220 billion in investment and almost 300,000 jobs. The tension between economic momentum and political pushback is intensifying.
Still, the economics speak for themselves. With fossil fuel projects facing higher costs and public pressure, clean energy continues to outcompete. This is a market that’s racing ahead, even if Washington is stuck in neutral.
