Manchester City Installs Solar Panels to Power Joie Stadium
Manchester City Women’s Joie Stadium has now become one of Manchester’s greenest landmarks, thanks to a recent installation of over 2,800 solar panels. This initiative, part of the football club’s larger goal of adding 10,500 solar panels across its facilities, aims to offset the stadium’s entire energy needs, allowing it to operate on self-generated solar power.
Partnering with Jinko, Manchester City’s solar panel installation underscores the club’s commitment to sustainability, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The project’s first phase has focused on panel installations across the City Football Academy, while the second phase will include thousands of ground-mounted panels by the end of the 2024/25 season. UK’s First Intercity Battery-Powered Train Sets New Standard for Green Travel
In a pioneering move, Hitachi Rail, in partnership with Angel Trains and TransPennine Express, has successfully trialled the UK’s first intercity battery-powered train, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly transport. This 700kW battery train achieved speeds of over 75 mph, providing more than 70 kilometres of range, and has demonstrated fuel savings of up to 50% thanks to its efficient “Eco-mode.”
The trial has exceeded expectations, proving that battery-powered trains can serve as a viable replacement for diesel engines, especially on routes lacking overhead electrification. UK Rail Minister Lord Hendy lauded the development, stating, “The success of this trial will pave the way for greener, more reliable journeys for millions of passengers.”
With further development in partnership with Innovate UK and the University of Birmingham, Hitachi Rail is set to lead the charge in creating a more sustainable rail network in the UK. This marks a significant step towards reducing emissions in public transport, and could soon make diesel trains a thing of the past.
Wildlife Trusts’ “Nextdoor Nature” Project Reaches Over 1,600 UK Communities
The Wildlife Trusts’ “Nextdoor Nature” project, backed by a £5 million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, has connected more than 1,600 communities across the UK with local wildlife. This initiative has exceeded its expected reach by eight times, empowering communities to take action for nature.
