Fastsort-Textile uses AI and hyperspectral recognition to detect materials such as nylon and polyester, then separate them into more useful streams. At the facility using the machine, unrecyclable textile output reportedly fell from 50 per cent to 30 per cent.
For anyone who has wondered where unwanted clothes really go, this feels useful. Better sorting could help turn old clothing into new materials, cut waste, and reduce pressure on virgin fibres. It will not fix fast fashion alone, as that beast has many heads and probably owns several discount codes. Ocean-Bound Plastic Becomes Food Packaging
Prevented Ocean Plastic has announced food-safe recycled polypropylene for European markets, produced to meet the EU 2022/1616 standard. Polypropylene is used in everyday items such as cups, trays, caps, bottles, and flexible films, so this is not a niche material hiding in a dusty industrial corner. It is the kind of plastic many people touch without noticing during lunch.
The innovation brings together collection, processing, traceability, and packaging partners, using ocean-bound plastic collected in Indonesia. Prevented Ocean Plastic says the initiative could stop 500 million polypropylene cups from entering the ocean each year in its first year, with the capacity to grow. The organisation has since said its materials now appear in 1,000 products, up from 500 less than two years earlier.
This matters as recycled plastic often struggles to return to high-value uses, especially where food safety is involved. If plastic heading for waterways can be traced, processed, and safely used again in food packaging, circularity becomes easier for brands and customers to grasp. It does not give anyone permission to be careless with plastic, yet it shows how better systems can turn waste into something useful again.
