The Plastic Solution: Introduction
We’re excited to welcome The Plastic Solution to the Play It Green community!
Founded by Chris Tapp, The Plastic Solution tackles one of the planet’s biggest problems: plastic waste. Through their closed-loop collection system, they reuse specially designed plastic containers, reducing landfill, pollution and carbon in one move.
By joining our Climate Positive Workforce, The Plastic Solution is taking practical steps to become more sustainable. Their team will receive weekly sustainability education and support, and every month trees, mangroves and sea kelp will be planted on their behalf.
They’ve also chosen to support The Woodland Trust, helping to protect and restore UK woodland through their subscription.
In a brilliant new initiative, The Plastic Solution is linking each container collected to nature repair. That means every piece of plastic saved will contribute to rewilding, carbon reduction and job creation. It’s a collection service that leaves the planet better off.
We spoke to founder Chris Tapp to learn more about the business, its mission and the impact they hope to make.

Tell us a bit about The Plastic Solution and how it started.
I founded The Plastic Solution to tackle one of the plant’s biggest problems: single use plastic container waste for commercial cleaning chemicals. The scale of this waste problem in the UK runs into many thousands of tonnes annually, and to date there has been no answer to this growing problem. As an example the UK Hospitality sector generates over 7,000 tonnes of this waste every year. These containers can not be recycled or repurposed on account of the chemical leaching that occurs inside each container wall, hence they enter the waste stream.
Our closed loop refill-reuse system ensures that these specially designed containers never enter the waste stream, thereby stopping the massive flow of chemical plastic containers going to landfill or incineration. Empty containers are collected, collated, refilled and re-used, continuously. It is a genuine circular economy solution, in what has historically been a totally linear process – Take – Make – Waste.
Why does sustainability matter to you and your business?
Plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time. As a business, we feel a responsibility to do something about it. Our approach tackles waste directly, but it also reduces carbon and pollution. By linking collections to nature-based solutions, we’re extending the positive impact beyond waste reduction to include ecosystem repair, carbon capture, and benefits for local communities.
Sustainability initiatives usually come at a price. Not so with this programme. Due to the air-sealed nature of the special containers, formula concentration levels are much higher than industry norms. This results in substantial cost saving benefits. Customers are regularly experiencing cost saving benefits of between 20 and 40% on their previous menu. So it really is ground breaking. Driving Sustainability whilst Saving Cost, the perfect combination.
Why did you decide to collaborate with Play It Green?
We wanted to work with a partner that shares our outlook. Play It Green’s three-step approach of reduce, repair, and regive fits perfectly with how we think. By joining, our team is supported with weekly sustainability education, nature-based solutions are funded with every collection, and we’re giving back through our chosen charity, The Woodland Trust. That blend of people, planet, and purpose made the collaboration an easy decision.

What’s next for The Plastic Solution?
We’re focused on scaling up our collections and strengthening the link between the containers we collect and nature repair. The aim is to bring more businesses into the system, so every collection reduces plastic waste and drives measurable environmental and social benefits.

Looking ahead, we want to expand our service to new regions, create more local jobs, and make our closed-loop model the standard way of tackling plastic waste.
