Today, we’re highlighting the top three most-read business tips of the year, each playing a vital role in driving sustainability and promoting a greener future.

Sustainable Video Conferencing (24th January)
In an increasingly digital world, our tip on sustainable video conferencing struck a chord with many. While virtual meetings have become the norm, their environmental impact often goes unnoticed. The shift to online platforms has led to a significant surge in internet traffic, contributing to substantial carbon emissions due to data centre energy consumption.

We explored the history of video conferencing, from its inception with AT&T’s Picturephone in 1964 to the widespread use of platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams today. The tip highlighted the hidden environmental costs of data usage, noting that streaming high-quality video can emit up to 441 g CO2e per hour. To mitigate this, businesses were encouraged to adopt sustainable practices such as reducing streaming quality, turning off cameras when not necessary, and choosing platforms committed to energy efficiency.
Companies like Whereby and Zoho were spotlighted for their efforts in planting trees per video call and promoting eco-friendly practices. By making conscious choices in our virtual communications, we can reduce our digital carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Understanding Scopes 1, 2, and 3 (24th April)
Our second most-read tip delved into the essential concept of carbon emission scopes, a foundational element for any business aiming to reduce its environmental impact. Understanding Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions is crucial for measuring and managing a company’s total carbon footprint.

- Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as company vehicles and on-site energy production.
- Scope 2 encompasses indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, or steam.
- Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, from raw material extraction to product disposal.
By comprehensively assessing all three scopes, businesses can identify key areas for emission reductions. The tip provided practical steps, such as conducting a carbon footprint assessment, setting science-based targets, embracing renewable energy, optimising supply chains, and innovating product design. Emphasising that reducing emissions is not just a responsibility but also a strategic opportunity, the tip encouraged businesses to lead the shift towards sustainability, enhancing their reputation and ensuring long-term success.

The Growing Importance of ESG in Business (24th July)
Topping the list is our insight into the escalating significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria in the corporate world. The tip highlighted how employees and consumers are increasingly prioritising sustainability and ethical practices in their decision-making processes.

Research cited revealed that a majority of employees consider a company’s commitment to sustainability when choosing where to work, with 83% of millennials and Gen Z employees rating ESG policies as a critical factor. Similarly, consumers are more inclined to support brands that demonstrate genuine commitment to social responsibility, with 73% willing to change consumption habits to reduce environmental impact.
The business case for embracing ESG is strong. Companies with robust ESG practices not only outperform financially but also enjoy higher employee satisfaction, increased customer loyalty, and better risk management. By integrating ESG principles, businesses can drive innovation, open new opportunities, and secure long-term growth. The tip urged companies to move beyond mere compliance and leverage ESG as a strategic advantage in today’s market.
