Sustainability News for 26th May: Introduction
Welcome to your Sustainability News for 26th May. In a world full of gloomy headlines, it’s refreshing to focus on progress. This week, we’ve got rooftops going solar, fashion going circular, and thousands getting the skills to heat homes the greener way. It’s all happening, and as part of the Play It Green community, you’re helping keep the momentum going. Let’s see what’s new.

New Homes to Shine with Solar by 2027
From 2027, nearly all new homes in England will be built with solar panels. That’s the promise from the government as part of the Future Homes Standard. The aim is to lower emissions, cut energy bills, and make clean energy a standard, not a luxury. The new rules are expected to increase construction costs by around £3,000 to £4,000, but homeowners could save over £1,000 a year on energy.

Keir Starmer has stood firm despite criticism from Tony Blair, who branded current climate policies “irrational”. Starmer responded by reaffirming net zero as a core commitment. Meanwhile, grants and loans are on the way to help retrofit existing homes with solar, so no one is left behind.
Greenpeace UK’s Lily-Rose Ellis welcomed the move, calling it “common sense.” And the government echoed that sentiment, saying solar panels are key to cutting bills and boosting energy security. With 1.5 million homes on Labour’s to-do list, this is more than a symbolic shift. It’s an energy revolution, tiled onto rooftops.
Circular Fashion Gets a Big Boost
Big names in fashion have joined forces to trial circular business models in a bid to rethink retail. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s initiative, The Fashion ReModel, now includes Decathlon, eBay, John Lewis, and luxury group Tapestry. Together, they’ll test systems built on reuse, repair, resale, and rental.

The stats behind this move are staggering. Every year, 100 billion garments are made. Around 92 million tonnes of them end up in landfills. And the number of times we wear an item has dropped by more than a third in just 15 years. The industry is creaking under the weight of waste.
Decathlon is already on the case with rental schemes, repair workshops and tent buy-backs. Its sustainability director, Maeva Lombardo, said their involvement reflects a shared belief in the power of industry collaboration.
By working with finance and supply chain experts, these brands are trying to prove that circular fashion isn’t just a nice idea. It can work at scale. And if it does, it could help transform one of the world’s most polluting industries into one that extends the life of clothes instead of pumping out more.

Home Upgrades Get a Greener Makeover
The government has unveiled plans to give families more say and more support when upgrading to cleaner heating systems. Proposals include grants for air-to-air heat pumps, heat batteries, and more flexible ownership options such as leasing. All part of the Warm Homes Plan, it aims to make low-carbon heating accessible, affordable, and appealing.

Applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme have surged, with a record 4,000 in March alone. With a £7,500 grant on offer, it’s not surprising. Heat pumps are a central focus, saving households around £100 annually when paired with smart tariffs.
To keep up with demand, up to 18,000 new training spots will be created for retrofitters. That means more people learning to install solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, and heat networks. Copeland in Northern Ireland has been given £4.6 million to expand production of heat pump components, creating jobs and boosting clean tech.
Industry voices are backing the move. Greg Jackson of Octopus Energy said it’s vital to train thousands more workers to hit climate goals. And Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Energy Consumers, summed it up well: lower bills, warmer homes, and a cleaner future. Sounds like a good deal.
