The Environmental Impact of Non-Sustainable Picnics

Around 36 per cent of all plastic produced is used for packaging, including food and drink containers, and 85 per cent of that packaging ends up in landfill or as mismanaged waste. That is grim enough in general, and it feels even grimmer when it is attached to one sunny lunch in the park.
The UK has moved on this too. In England, single-use plastic cutlery is banned and single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays are restricted, with the rules covering items made wholly or partly from plastic, including compostable and recycled plastic versions. The message is clear: the throwaway picnic has had a very good run, and it needs retiring.
What to Look For in Sustainable Picnics
Sustainable picnics follow a simple rule: reusable first, disposable last. A sturdy blanket, refillable bottles, and real cutlery can serve you for years, especially when you prioritise high-quality materials. Seek out stainless steel, glass, organic cotton, or untreated wood; these materials age gracefully and outperform flimsy plastic blends, ensuring your gear doesn’t end up forgotten in a cupboard by May.
When hosting larger gatherings, don’t be misled by “green-sounding” labels. In England, items marked as biodegradable or compostable can still fall under single-use plastic restrictions. To truly reduce waste, focus on the food itself: pack only what will be eaten, bring containers for leftovers, and always carry a bag for any rubbish. Choosing items with solid stitching and waterproof backing ensures your setup handles the outdoors as well as it looks.
