Welcome to our Nature Repair Report for November 2024. At Play It Green, we’re passionate about restoring nature through tree planting and environmental restoration initiatives. This month, we’re excited to share not just our regular tree planting report but also how our efforts are supported by groundbreaking research from Oxford University. We’ll also provide updates on our restoration sites in Kenya, Canada, and Senegal.
Nature-Based Solutions Backed by Oxford University Research
A comprehensive review by Oxford University examined 66 academic studies on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and their economic impacts. The research highlights how NbS contribute to income generation, job creation, and economic growth while also addressing biodiversity, climate, and social equity.
Key Findings:
- Positive Economic Outcomes: 65% of studies reported positive impacts on income and revenue, especially through nature-based interventions like those we implement.
- Job Creation: NbS activities, such as tree planting and ecosystem restoration, create employment opportunities, particularly in rural communities.
- Environmental and Social Benefits: NbS contribute to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and improved ecosystem health.
The study emphasises the importance of involving local communities and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits to maximise the effectiveness of NbS.
Nature Repair Report November 2024: Our Projects Aligned with Research
Kwale and Kilifi, Kenya: Mangrove Restoration
In Kenya, we’re restoring mangrove forests along the coastline of Kwale and Kilifi counties. Mangroves are vital for:
- Carbon Sequestration: Mangroves absorb significant amounts of CO₂, helping mitigate climate change.
- Protecting Shorelines: They act as natural barriers against erosion and storm surges.
- Supporting Biodiversity: Mangroves provide habitats for a diverse range of marine life.
Update: To date, we’ve planted nearly 100,000* mangroves, engaging local communities in the restoration process and providing employment opportunities, which aligns with the Oxford research findings on job creation and income generation.
* We also planted over 400,000 mangroves in Madagascar with our previous nature repair partner, Eden Reforestation.
Sunshine Coast, Canada: Sea Kelp Cultivation
Our sea kelp project on the Sunshine Coast of Canada contributes to environmental restoration by:
- Enhancing Marine Ecosystems: Kelp forests support marine biodiversity and improve ocean health.
- Carbon Absorption: Sea kelp is highly efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- Sustainable Industry: Harvested kelp can be used in various sustainable products.
Update: We’ve planted nearly 100,000 sea kelp, promoting marine biodiversity and supporting local economies, in line with the research’s emphasis on economic growth through NbS.
Kedougou, Senegal: Agroforestry Initiatives
Following the successful wrap-up of our Rwanda project, we’ve expanded our efforts to Kedougou, Senegal, where we’re implementing agroforestry practices:
- Improving Food Security: Planting fruit trees enhances local food supplies.
- Diversifying Incomes: Farmers benefit from the sale of fruits and other tree products.
- Environmental Restoration: Trees combat soil erosion and improve soil fertility.
Update: Combined, we’ve planted nearly 100,000 agroforestry fruit trees in Senegal, working closely with local farmers. This approach reflects the Oxford study’s findings on the importance of community involvement and equitable benefits.
Science and Technology in Monitoring
Our restoration efforts are meticulously monitored using advanced science and technology:
- Satellite Imagery and GIS Mapping: To track the growth and health of our planting sites.
- Blockchain Verification: Ensures transparency and trust in our reporting, providing verifiable data on our impact.
- Data Analytics: Helps assess carbon sequestration rates and biodiversity improvements.
- AI Assessment: AI has been developed to assess the data and provide in-depth reporting.
This technological approach aligns with the Oxford University study’s recommendation for robust monitoring and evaluation of NbS projects. We have also partnered with the AI department at Salford University to create robust reporting methods.
