The Nature Repair Report for February 2026 focuses on Play It Green’s agroforestry work in Senegal, where degraded farmland is being restored through mixed tree and food-crop systems delivered in partnership with veritree.
At Play It Green, we do not carry out restoration ourselves. We fund and scale nature restoration projects, and we report on that work conservatively and transparently using verified, site-level data. In Senegal, this agroforestry programme is rebuilding soil health, supporting food production, and creating long-term employment.

Agroforestry in Senegal
Agroforestry is used to restore degraded farmland by combining trees, crops, and native species within the same landscape. This approach improves soil structure, increases productivity, and reduces pressure on surrounding ecosystems.
Across the Senegal programme, 210,580 agroforestry trees have been ordered. Based on delivery already achieved on site, this planting is expected to restore approximately 136 hectares of land, equivalent to around 5,200 tennis courts.
Rather than short-term planting, the focus is on long-term land repair. Restored plots remain productive for farming, while gradually rebuilding ecological function and resilience.
Nature Impact
Agroforestry restores nature by rebuilding whole systems, not just adding tree cover.
The Senegal programme reintroduces structural diversity into the landscape. Tree canopies provide shade and shelter, crops add mid-level structure, and ground cover protects soil and supports insects. This layered habitat supports wildlife while allowing food production to continue.
Ecological recovery is tracked using bioacoustic monitoring, which measures wildlife presence through sound. To date, 20 bird species have been detected, including birds of prey and migratory species, signalling improving habitat quality as land recovers.
The programme includes 29 agroforestry species, supporting pollinators, birds, and soil life. Over time, these systems are expected to support richer ecosystems while remaining productive for local communities.
Carbon Sequestration Impact
Agroforestry trees can sequester significant amounts of carbon over their lifetime. For reporting purposes, Play It Green applies a deliberately conservative model.
Rather than claiming lifetime sequestration, only the first ten years of growth are included, estimated at 100 kilograms of CO₂ per tree. This avoids overstating impact and reflects early-stage performance.
Using this approach, the 210,580 agroforestry trees ordered through the Senegal programme are expected to sequester at least 21,058 tonnes of CO₂ over their first decade. Carbon capture beyond this period is not included in reported figures.
Employment and Livelihoods
Nature repair only works if it supports people alongside the land.
Based on delivery rates already achieved, the full agroforestry programme to date is expected to generate around 6,800 workdays of employment. This provides stable income for local planting teams and farming families, reducing reliance on short-term or insecure work.
Women play a central role within the programme, holding 50% of leadership positions. This supports stronger representation in land management, nursery operations, and local decision-making.
Knowledge and Long-Term Impact
Beyond trees and hectares, the programme builds knowledge that lasts.
Agroforestry strengthens local skills in land management, crop diversification, and long-term planning. As restored land becomes more productive, communities gain confidence in approaches that balance food production with ecosystem recovery.
This knowledge supports future restoration that is locally led, evidence-based, and capable of scaling without losing credibility.
