Staff Development: A Sustainable Approach

Guest Blog: A Sustainable Approach to Staff Development

At CVP, we believe that staff development is the cornerstone of any successful organisation. Empowering individuals to reach their full potential is not just a goal; it’s a journey. And what better way to guide this journey than through a sustainable approach?

We’re committed to providing opportunities for staff development and growth through our Coaching Professional Level 5 apprenticeship. But, that’s not where our commitment ends. We’re also dedicated to ensuring our operations are as green as possible.

So, let’s explore how we blend staff development with sustainability, and how our partnership with Play It Green helps us lead the way.

Coaching Professional Level 5: Building Staff Development Sustainably

Our Coaching Professional Level 5 apprenticeship isn’t just another staff development training program. It’s a stepping stone for both educational and business professionals to promote a coaching culture within their organisations. Spanning 12 to 14 months, this government-funded program—up to £5,000 per participant—provides accredited training that goes beyond the basics. Participants gain tools and techniques to support their colleagues’ growth, enhance productivity, and build a resilient and adaptable team.

By adopting a team-centric approach, this program encourages ethical leadership, which is vital in today’s fast-paced business environment. Ethical leadership not only builds trust but also promotes a positive workplace culture. Through structured modules covering various coaching techniques, participants learn to navigate complex workplace dynamics, ensuring that everyone in the organisation benefits from improved collaboration and communication.

Commitment to Sustainability: A Climate Positive Workforce

Our commitment to staff development doesn’t stop with coaching. We understand that developing your team also means considering the world they live in. Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. We’ve taken significant steps to minimise our environmental footprint, and we’re proud to have a climate-positive workforce. But what does this mean in practice?

Leveraging Technology for Sustainability

One of our most impactful initiatives is delivering our coaching program entirely online. By doing so, we drastically cut down on the need for travel and physical paperwork. Not only does this make our training more accessible, but it also significantly reduces the environmental impact. For instance, businesses in the UK consume millions of tons of paper annually, contributing to deforestation and waste.

By going digital, we conserve resources and reduce CO2 emissions associated with paper production and waste. Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees and reduce carbon emissions by nearly one metric ton—proof that small changes can have a big impact.

Remote Working: A Sustainable Success

In 2023, we transitioned to a remote working model, which has been nothing short of a success. This shift has not only improved our team’s work-life balance but also reduced our carbon footprint. Previously, our Skills Director logged up to 28,000 miles a year driving to various training locations.

To put this into perspective, the average car emits around 404 grams of CO2 per mile. By eliminating the need for commuting, we save approximately 11.3 metric tons of CO2 annually. The environmental benefits are clear, but the positive effects on staff morale and well-being are equally important.

Partnering with Play It Green for a Greener Future

Our sustainability efforts have been greatly enhanced by our partnership with Play It Green. They’ve made our journey towards becoming a more sustainable organisation smoother and more impactful. What we appreciate most about Play It Green is their ability to cut through the noise and make eco-friendly practices accessible and achievable, even for smaller businesses like ours.

With Play It Green’s support, we’ve not only rebalanced our carbon footprint by planting trees but also raised awareness within our team about the importance of sustainability. Their approach focuses on taking actionable steps rather than overwhelming businesses with complex jargon or unattainable goals. This practicality has enabled us to integrate sustainability seamlessly into our core business operations.

The Benefits of Sustainable Staff Development

A sustainable approach to staff development offers numerous benefits beyond just environmental impact. By aligning our staff development programs with sustainability goals, we’ve seen increased job satisfaction, improved team collaboration, and enhanced leadership skills within our organisation. Moreover, our commitment to sustainability has made us more attractive to top talent who value working for a responsible employer.
