AJS Flood Risk Consulting x Play It Green: Introduction

In our latest exciting news, Play It Green is proud to welcome AJS Flood Risk Consulting to our amazing community.

West Midlands-based AJS Flood Risk Consulting are a family-run consultancy that specialises in project appraisal, research and development within Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM). They also undertake tree-related research projects and projects within the wider environmental, built environment and sustainability sectors.

We are excited to be supporting their team with weekly education on sustainability and footprint reduction for the business and their personal lives. Not only that but we will plant 10 trees per month for each team member, while they are on the journey of reduction. The business also has access to all our Net Zero and marketing support and a community of like-minded businesses.

Finally, and how cool is this, they have chosen Coffee4Craig as their good cause which sees 10% of the subscription regiven to this amazing charity.

We recently caught up with Pete Stevens, Senior Environmental Consultant, to find out more about this fantastic business and what the future holds for AJS Flood Risk Consulting.

Please, tell us a little about AJS Flood Risk Consulting

At AJS Flood Risk Consulting we aim to look holistically at how Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) interventions can be planned and managed. Avoiding flood damages can result in significant carbon reductions but we can make schemes even more sustainable by reducing the carbon associated with the interventions themselves. We aim to do this by mapping out exactly which interventions should occur when, and then looking at the construction itself to reduce carbon in the materials used and methods employed, and make recommendations to our clients.

The company also specialise in tree-related research – my background is nature conservation and we have undertaken research into urban tree planting and ways to maximise the benefits of growing local trees, such as through community tree nurseries. As well as that, we work with partners in academia, local authorities and others to use the best scientific evidence to support our decisions.

Why is sustainability important to you?

We only have one planet, which we share with a whole host of other beings. While it is likely humankind will survive in some form, by acting decisively and quickly now we can avoid the inevitable harm that stems from our current economic system. We all have our part to play in reversing dramatic species decline, improving the well-being of the human population and creating a circular economy rather than robbing our grandchildren to feed our grandparents.

Why did you decide to collaborate with Play It Green?

We are always looking for ways to further minimise our impact on the planet, but the energy use from a laptop is unavoidable. Alongside other measures such as green energy and managing our gardens organically, we can now support sustainable tree planting with Play it Green.

What does the future hold for AJS Flood Risk Consulting?

We are currently working with Coventry University on a project looking to support and build evidence around community tree nurseries. This type of tree growing can maximise social benefits and minimise environmental costs, even before the tree is planted in its final home and brings the whole host of well-documented benefits. We hope to continue to expand our research in this area as tree planting becomes more important.

Dr Andy Stevens, Director, AJS Flood Risk Consulting

We are delighted as a small company to deliver on our climate commitments, supported by Play It Green to offset both company and personal carbon emissions through sustainable tree planting schemes. With this collaboration, we are now ‘carbon positive’  and are in a position to inspire others and influence our clients to make sustainable decisions.

Richard Dickson, Co-Founder, Play It Green

“Play It Green is delighted to welcome Pete, Dr Stevens and the team to our growing community of sustainable change makers. Flooding is a consequence of climate change and will happen more frequently unless preventative measures are put into place. In that regard, we are both in the same business and together we’ll create a brighter future for all.”
