Earlier this month, the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, set the stage for discussions on major global issues, including the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping our economy and society. These conversations are crucial as they outline strategies for tackling climate, nature, and energy challenges. Our tree planting partner, Veritree, is playing a pivotal role in this arena, integrating AI into their systems to revolutionise how we assess the growth and survivability of trees.
Artificial Intelligence: Revolutionising Reforestation with AI
Gone are the days of slow, manual methodologies. Our planting partner has pioneered the use of computer vision and AI to transform tree survival evaluations. This innovative approach, developed in collaboration with the University of British Columbia, utilises Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to analyse over 25,000 photos. The goal? To identify living and dead trees at different growth stages, initially focusing on mangroves with images captured by our planting partners in Kenya.

But it’s not just about survival rates. Our AI-driven approach aims to gather comprehensive data on each tree, including species, leaf counts, tree height, and planting density.
