Composty x Play It Green: Introduction

Today, we’re thrilled to welcome Composty into the Play It Green community, a beacon of hope for families striving for a greener lifestyle. Composty has revolutionised how we think about household cleaning, offering products that are as kind to the environment as they are effective.

Their range is designed for households at every stage of their sustainable living journey, from those just beginning to embrace eco-friendly practices to seasoned green living veterans. Composty’s approach goes beyond just selling products; they’re building connections with consumers who share a deep commitment to protecting our planet.

By joining Play It Green, Composty is taking another step forward in its sustainability journey. They’re actively participating in our Climate Positive Workforce initiative, leading by example in educating their team about sustainability and footprint reduction. Furthermore, through actions like planting trees to offset carbon footprints and supporting The Woodland Trust, Composty is laying the groundwork for a greener, more sustainable future.

With the support of our platform, our net-zero guidance and partners, Composty is set to increase its impact even further. We had the pleasure of speaking with Matt Guest, who shared his vision for Composty, the foundational values driving the company, and his excitement for what the future holds for this family business deeply rooted in sustainability.

Please, tell us a little about the History and Values of Composty

It all started back in 2016 when our daughter was born. Helen and I were over the moon, but it also made us think harder about the kind of world we wanted her to grow up in. We wanted her to inherit a planet that was greener, cleaner, and just better. That’s when we decided to take our everyday lifestyle choices more seriously, aiming for sustainability in our habits. However, we quickly realised that the journey wasn’t going to be easy. The so-called “green” solutions were often too pricey or, frankly, not green enough. It felt like a frustrating compromise.

Driven by a mix of frustration and hope, we decided to step up and do something about it. That’s why we founded Composty in February 2021. Our aim was clear from the get-go: to offer eco-friendly, compostable cleaning products that didn’t just talk the talk but walked the walk — all without breaking the bank. We were determined to make sustainable living accessible to everyone because we firmly believe no one should be priced out of making positive choices for the planet.

Our core product, the compostable sponge, is something we’re incredibly proud of. Not only is it a testament to our commitment to sustainability, but it also embodies our response to the environmental crisis. We were staggered to learn that a plastic sponge can take up to 500 years to degrade at landfill and that a shocking number of plastic sponges are thrown away each year in the UK alone (around 400 million). It was clear to us; we needed to provide a viable, eco-friendly alternative.

What’s happened since Composty launched?

Since launching, we’ve seen our small idea grow beyond what we initially imagined. We’ve managed to plant trees capable of removing 323 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere annually. It’s a small step towards a larger goal, but knowing that over 55,000 households across the UK are now using our eco-friendly sponges and cloths gives us hope.

But we didn’t stop there. With Composty Cares, we’ve pledged to invest 1% of all our revenue back into the planet. We’re planting trees, yes, but we’re also supporting essential social charities and aiming to have a broader impact on environmental conservation. This journey of ours isn’t just about selling products; it’s about starting a movement towards a sustainable future for all.

Reflecting on our journey, from our initial frustrations to where we stand today, I’m filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. Helen and I, along with our little eco-warrior family (4 kids now!), are excited to continue sharing our products and philosophy with the world, encouraging more families to join us in making sustainable living a reality. Together, we believe we can make a significant difference.

What’s happening now that’s exciting for Composty?

The most thrilling development for Composty right now is our venture into the B2B market. We’re engaging with cleaning companies, the hospitality sector, and short-term rentals, amongst others. They’re all keen on our compact, eco-friendly solutions that not only elevate their sustainability practices but also play a part in safeguarding our planet. It’s a significant stride towards broadening our impact and fostering sustainable practices across various industries.

Why did Composty decide to collaborate with Play It Green?

Composty decided to collaborate with Play It Green to further our commitment to sustainability by making our workforce climate-positive. Play It Green’s Climate Positive Workforce plan offers a structured way to reduce our carbon footprint, reforest the planet, and support our journey towards more sustainable practices, aligning perfectly with our values and mission to protect the environment. This partnership reflects our dedication to making real, impactful changes not just in our products but in how we operate as a company.

What does the future hold for Composty?

The future for Composty is incredibly exciting. We’re looking to bring our sustainable products to a wider audience by entering retail and high street stores, making it easier than ever for customers to switch to eco-friendly alternatives. Additionally, we’re planning an expansion to Europe and North America, broadening our impact and helping more people and businesses make the shift towards sustainability. This growth represents a significant step in our journey, one that will allow us to make a greater positive impact on the environment.
