Inspirational Sustainability News from Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways, in partnership with Twelve, is promoting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to address emissions in the aviation industry. The UAE-based airline and Twelve, a carbon transformation company, have developed SAF produced from CO2 and renewable energy.

Mohammad Al Bulooki, Chief Operating Officer at Etihad said: “Etihad Airways is working hard on its sustainability strategy and deploying a range of initiatives across the spectrum of sustainability to achieve that.”

By combining renewable energy and water, Twelve converts CO2 into chemicals and materials, reducing emissions by 90% compared to fossil fuels. Etihad’s sustainability goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and waste-to-fuel conversion align with this partnership. They introduced the Etihad Greenliner Program in 2019, focusing on sustainability initiatives with Boeing and GE.

Etihad’s collaboration with Twelve reinforces its commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in aviation. Twelve has developed E-Jet fuel, a low-carbon jet fuel tested by the US Air Force, produced using carbon transformation technology. The partnership aims to promote SAF globally through international demonstration flights.

Inspirational Sustainability News from The Lycra Company

The LYCRA Company has teamed up with Qira to produce bio-derived spandex using QORE, marking a new chapter in sustainable fashion.  LYCRA, invented in 1958, revolutionised the world of garments by providing elasticity and durability. Fast forward to the present, LYCRA continues to innovate and meet consumer needs with over 200 unique fibres.

In partnership with Qore, The LYCRA Company has achieved a breakthrough in bio-derived spandex production. With QIRA as a key ingredient, 70% of LYCRA fibre content will come from annually renewable sources.

This collaboration aligns with LYCRA’s commitment to a circular economy and reducing environmental impact. Julien Born, CEO of The LYCRA Company said, “As part of our sustainability goals, we are committed to delivering products that support a more circular economy while helping our apparel and personal care customers reduce their footprint.”

The partnership signifies a significant step towards sustainability in the fashion industry. By using field corn grown by Iowa farmers, LYCRA and QIRA contribute to reduced CO2 emissions. Furthermore, there is the replacement of finite resources with renewable ones.

Inspirational Sustainability News from Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s is making waves in the eco-friendly space by converting its entire fleet at the Nine Elms London superstore to electric vehicles (EVs). This move aligns with their goal of achieving net-zero operational emissions by 2035. The fleet, consisting of 12 vans, will now be replaced with pure-electric models, resulting in a reduction of 57 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually.

Charging the vans will be done using 100% renewable electricity. Sainsbury’s is not stopping there. They are also planning to adopt electric refrigerated trailers and have been actively trialling innovative smart charging solutions. The supermarket aims to electrify its entire fleet by 2035, including refrigerated vehicles.

This exciting news coincides with a joint call from businesses urging the UK government to prioritise scaling the national electric HGV stock. The UK Platform for Battery Electric Trucking, which includes organizations like National Grid and the John Lewis Partnership, is advocating for a zero-emission vehicle mandate for HGV manufacturers to ensure the phase-out of petrol and diesel HGVs by 2040.
