North West Wholesale Joins Play It Green

In amazing news, North West Wholesale has joined the Play It Green community and now has a Climate Positive Green Team.

North West Wholesale is an independently owned wholesale business catering to retailers, convenience stores and food outlets offering their loyal customers delivery nationally.

The business is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, and waste and supporting the circular economy. One aspect of the wholesaler is taking clearance or short-dated stock and getting it back into circulation preventing it from going to landfill.

Now, North West Wholesale is being supported on its sustainability journey, rebalancing its footprint and 10% of the subscription is being given back to its chosen charity, North West Air Ambulance.

We caught up with Tom Lumsden, the founder of North West Wholesale to find out more about the company, what’s important to them and what the future holds!

Please, tell us a little about North West Wholesale

We are an independent delivery wholesale company specialising in local and national distribution of the UK’s biggest branded goods. Our product range includes soft drinks, confectionery, grocery products, household & cleaning lines.

Why is sustainability important to North West Wholesale?

We feel sustainable actions help make a real difference not only in the industry we operate in but also in society. Being more sustainable fits both our business values and personal values. We’ll become a better business as a result and feel slightly better and more motivated as a workforce.

By taking positive steps towards sustainability we aim to reduce our carbon footprint and take actions to reduce the amount of toxins released into the environment. I’m a father and want to take positive actions today so future generations can live in clean, healthy and less polluting times.

Why did North West Wholesale decide to collaborate with Play It Green?

We decided to collaborate with Play it Green because we are not perfect and wish to improve. We are very much supplier-led in terms of what packaging our products come in. Many are still packaged in plastic and it is difficult to place demands when some of this is clearance stock.

The retail industry has changed in recent years and you see more products coming through that are packaged in materials better for the environment. Creating big changes in this sector will involve the collective efforts of many different parties. I’m glad North West Wholesale is now doing its bit and now has a guiding hand in Play It Green to make further improvements each year.

By collaborating with Play It Green we are making small steps in the right direction to do our bit for sustainability and the environment.

What does the future hold for North West Wholesale?

We are a business who are fortunate enough to be in steady growth year on year which is a great position to be in.

In line with our growth plans, we are also making other climate-positive steps. We currently operate out of 3 warehouses but are due to move to a brand new larger premises in December. In our new premises, we have swapped out diesel and gas forklift trucks for electric trucks. We have also installed energy-saving lighting in our warehouse and smart sensors that only light up the part of the warehouse being used at that time. Each year we improve and we’ll be taking more steps to reduce our emissions in the future.

“I’m a great believer in you reap what you sow. The subscription supports us in reducing our carbon footprint and makes an ongoing impact through reforestation and charity giving. It helps us display and live our values in a very public way. Doing something is better than doing nothing and I’m going to enjoy the weekly education from Play It Green so my understanding grows and I can make more informed choices in the future.”

Richard Dickson, Co-Founder, Play It Green

“This is a family affair and I’m delighted my cousin Tom and North West Wholesale have signed up to Play It Green. It is sometimes difficult when business is mixed with family affairs however Tom showed a genuine love of Play It Green’s three-step solution to climate change. Reducing footprints, repairing the planet and regiving to society. It is a simple affordable package and I’m delighted that both businesses can now grow together.”
