Outstanding Eco News from Rolls Royce

In our first outstanding eco news story, Rolls-Royce has achieved a significant milestone with the successful first tests of its UltraFan technology demonstrator. These tests, conducted exclusively with 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), confirm the effectiveness of the integrated technologies, propelling aircraft engines towards enhanced efficiency.

The UltraFan engine showcases an impressive 10% improvement in efficiency compared to the already highly efficient Trent XWB, positioning it as a game changer in the industry. Tufan Erginbilgic, Chief Executive at Rolls-Royce, emphasises, “The technologies we are testing as part of this program have the capability to improve the engines of today as well as the engines of tomorrow.”

Furthermore, the UltraFan’s distinctive design architecture and flexibility make it stand out among the thousands of engines currently in operation. Rolls-Royce’s ability to downscale the engine as per customer requirements opens up possibilities for diverse propulsion solutions for future aircraft, including two-shaft, three-shaft, direct drive, and geared options.

This significant advancement in fuel efficiency and engine performance aligns with the industry’s target of achieving Net Zero flight by 2050. Rolls-Royce’s UltraFan program is a testament to its commitment to sustainability and revolutionising the aviation sector.

Outstanding Eco News from Logitech

Our second outstanding eco news story sees Logitech partner with iFixit to address the issue of electronic waste (e-waste) by offering self-repair options for computer peripherals. Recognising that e-waste is fuelled by consumption rates, short life cycles, and limited repair options, Logitech aims to increase the lifespan of its devices through the availability of first-party replacement parts.

Initially, the focus will be on repairable computer mice from the MX Master and MX Anywhere lines. Customers will have a range of options, with 11 different models covered, including the MX Master 3S and the MX Anywhere 3 for Mac.

The iFixit Logitech Repair Hub, launching later this summer, will provide standalone replacement parts or Fix Kits containing all the necessary tools for repairs. Currently, the Repair Hub offers replacement guides for Logitech mice, allowing users to open and clean their devices.

While initially limited to battery and rubber feet replacements, there are indications of potential expansion to cover more parts and devices in the future. Prices for Fix Kits vary based on the device, with genuine Logitech parts being offered.

Outstanding Eco News from Chivas Borthers

Our final outstanding eco news story sees Chivas Brothers and Volvo Trucks unveil Scotland’s first all-electric tractor unit in a pilot program aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. The truck, a Volvo FM Electric 6×2 tractor unit, will transport Scotch whisky and cut Chivas Brothers’ carbon emissions by 155 tonnes per year. The initiative is part of Chivas Brothers’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and contributes to Scotland’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

Managed by McPherson’s, Chivas Brothers’ haulage partner, the pilot program will assess the truck’s range, uptime, safety, and operational ease over a two-year period. The successful evaluation will determine the potential for a wider rollout across Chivas Brothers’ transport fleet.

Jean-Etienne Gourgues, Chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers, emphasised the company’s responsibility to sustainability and the broader impact of electrification beyond the whisky industry. The collaboration between Chivas Brothers and Volvo Trucks sets an example of adopting low-emission heavy trucks, driving toward a sustainable future.

This milestone in Scotland’s sustainable transportation journey highlights the use of innovative technologies to achieve net-zero goals. Chivas Brothers have already implemented other sustainable transport solutions, such as biogas trucks and vehicles trialling hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel.
