Social Impact and Carbon Calculation: Nature Repair Report

Social Impact and Carbon Calculation: Introduction

Welcome to the latest edition of our monthly nature repair report, brought to you by Play It Green. This month, we focus on Social Impact and Carbon Calculation. Play It Green is dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability and we are excited to share the progress of our recent tree planting initiatives with our community.

Transparency and accountability are key to our mission. To ensure our tree planting process is as transparent as possible, we use blockchain technology to document every step, from planting to growth. This secure and verifiable method guarantees that our tree planting activities are accountable and trustworthy.

In our commitment to enhancing transparency, we are proud to be partnering with Salford University. This collaboration allows us to incorporate academic rigor and independent oversight into our processes by using AI. This will ensure the highest standards of accuracy and credibility.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our mission to create a greener, healthier planet. Together, we are making a lasting impact through tree planting.

Social Impact and Carbon Calculation: From Kerosene to Solar

Check out our latest video from Kenya, where community member Hellen shares her inspiring story. Thanks to the funds provided by our amazing members, Hellen is employed through EarthLungs and veritree. This employment enables her to transition from using kerosene lamps to solar-powered lights.

This change not only benefits her health and the environment but also provides a brighter and safer light for her children to study by. Additionally, solar power brings significant cost savings, allowing Hellen to allocate more resources to her household.

Social Impact and Carbon Calculation: Understanding Our Methodology

Before diving into our methodology, it’s crucial to understand the two main types of carbon: green and blue. Green carbon is in terrestrial ecosystems like forests and grasslands. Here, plants absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, storing it in their biomass and soil.

Blue carbon exists in coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses. These plants capture carbon from water and air, storing it in their biomass and sediment. Both types play vital roles in mitigating climate change, each uniquely contributing to carbon sequestration.

Phase 1: The Foundation

Our tree planting report begins with Phase 1. This is where our planting partner makes initial estimations at the forest type level. These estimates are based on rigorous scientific research, peer-reviewed literature, and data from our trusted planting partners.

By considering tree species, density, maturity, and survival rate, our planting partner calculates carbon stock. This forms the statistical foundation for our planting partner’s Impact Hubs and Partner Portals. These provide us with reliable insights into carbon sequestration potential.

Phase 2: Tailored Precision

In Phase 2, our planting partner adopts a more tailored approach. It refines calculations through monitoring and data analysis using a project’s baseline and reference site. By leveraging remote sensing data, our planting partner quantifies above-ground carbon densities over the past decade.

This forms informed carbon baselines. The data, combined with on-ground measurements from a project’s reference site, allows for precise estimations of carbon sequestration specific to the restoration site.

Phase 3: The Quest for Accuracy

Phase 3 focuses on measuring carbon over time. For terrestrial ecosystems, this involves assessing Above Ground and Below Ground Carbon using advanced technologies like LiDAR and soil sampling. LiDAR scans and classifies surface points, providing detailed insights into above-ground tree biomass and density.

Furthermore, soil samples offer crucial data on below-ground carbon content. In areas where LiDAR data is unavailable, high-overlap orthophoto point cloud capture is used to gather comparable data.

Looking Ahead: A Digital Twin for Carbon Forecasting

As our planting partner continues refining its carbon methodology, our vision extends to forecasting. The long-term goal of Phase 3 is to create ‘Digital Twins’, sophisticated models that predict carbon growth based on years of data.

This approach aims to revolutionise carbon management, offering invaluable insights into future carbon sequestration potential. By combining scientific rigour with cutting-edge technology, we strive for more precision and reliability in the complex world of carbon measurement.

Social Impact and Carbon Calculation: Wrap Up

In this tree planting report, we’ve explored the intricate processes behind our carbon sequestration efforts, from understanding green and blue carbon to delving into the three phases of our methodology. Our planting partner’s approach, rooted in scientific research and advanced technologies, ensures that every tree we plant contributes effectively to mitigating climate change. By leveraging rigorous estimations, tailored precision, and continuous accuracy, we provide transparent and reliable insights into our environmental impact.

Moreover, we highlighted the incredible social impact our initiatives have on communities. The story of Hellen from Kenya, who transitioned from kerosene lamps to solar-powered lights thanks to her employment through, underscores the broader benefits of our efforts. This shift not only improves health and environmental conditions but also brings significant cost savings and better educational opportunities for her children.

As we look towards the future with innovative tools like Digital Twins, our commitment to environmental sustainability and social well-being remains unwavering. Thank you for supporting our mission to create a greener, healthier planet through effective nature repair initiatives.
