The History of Underwear

Underwear has a long and varied history that dates back to ancient civilizations.

Archaeologists’ earliest finds of underwear came from around 5000 BC!

Worn by people in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. these loincloths were made from linen or wool and worn for practical and cultural reasons.

Following this, by the Middle Ages, undergarments for both men and women tended to be made from linen.

During this time, corsets for women became popular as a means of achieving the desired hourglass figure.

These corsets were made from stiffened cloth and were often laced tightly.

This led to discomfort and even health problems for the women who wore them.

In the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution brought about significant changes in the way undergarments were made.

Subsequently, mass production techniques allowed for the creation of more affordable and widely available undergarments made from cotton.

The development of synthetic fibres in the 20th century also led to the creation of new and more comfortable undergarments.

Today, underwear is an essential part of most people’s wardrobes and is available in a wide variety of styles and materials.

The Environmental Impact of Underwear

Underwear can have a significant environmental impact, as the production and disposal of this type of clothing can have negative consequences for the planet.

One of the leading environmental issues related to underwear is the use of resources and energy required for its production.

Cotton, which is a common material used in the production of underwear, requires a significant amount of water to grow and process.

As well as this, it requires fertilisers and other chemicals which seep into the surrounding environment and eventually end up in the sea.

The use of synthetic materials, such as polyester, also requires energy to produce and uses harmful fossil fuels in the production process.

Another environmental concern is the disposal of underwear.

Like other types of clothing, underwear can end up in landfills where it can take decades to decompose.

According to the world economic forum, around 5 million KG of underwear goes to landfills every day in the US!

When underwear decomposes in landfills, it can also release harmful chemicals into the soil and water, causing further damage to the environment.

How To Be Sustainable With Underwear

There are several steps you can take to be more sustainable when it comes to underwear.

Choose sustainable materials: Look for underwear made from sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, bamboo, or recycled polyester. These materials are better for the environment and often more comfortable as well.

Consider the manufacturing process: Try and find brands that use eco-friendly manufacturing processes and have ethical labour practices. This can help to reduce the environmental impact of the production process.

Buy high-quality products: Investing in high-quality underwear that will last longer can help to reduce waste and the overall environmental impact of your clothing choices.

Wash and care for your underwear properly: Proper care can help to extend the life of your underwear. Use cold water and a gentle detergent when washing, and hang dry whenever possible.

Donate or recycle old underwear: When you’re ready to retire your old underwear, consider donating it to a thrift store or participating in a clothing recycling program. This can help to reduce waste and give your old underwear a second life.
