Fletchers Group x Play It Green: Member In Focus

Fletchers Group x Play It Green: Introduction

Fletchers Group, one of the UK’s most trusted and respected personal injury law and clinical negligence solicitors, became a member of Play It Green in 2024. With offices throughout the UK, Fletchers has responsible business at the heart of their operations. Fletchers Group has a long-held belief that they have a responsibility to their people, communities, and planet.

With headquarters in Manchester, Fletchers Group recently completed a Scope 1 & 2 Carbon Footprint Report with Play It Green partner Catalyst Commercial to measure their annual emissions. This showed that in their biggest office (Southport), they made a 13% reduction in carbon emissions.

To further their positive impact Fletchers decided to rebalance their historical emissions through Play It Green. In doing so, they are creating forests, new life and improved ecosystems across seas, coastal areas and land for this beautiful planet.

As per Play It Green policy, 10% of the fee will also go to the companies’ selected good cause, Fletchers Foundation.
Fletchers Group launched the Fletchers Foundation in January 2023, to provide grants to individuals following life-changing injuries, accidents, and illness, that have no access to legal recourse.

We caught up with Fletchers Group’s Responsible Business Manager, Reece Hobson-Adams, to find out more about what they do and their sustainability practices.

Please, tell us a little about Fletchers Group

Established in 1987, Fletchers Group is one of the largest clinical negligence and personal injury practices in the UK.

It’s home to a group of specialist clinical negligence and personal injury companies and legal brands. This includes Serious Injury Law, Minton Morrill, Cycle SOS, Biker SOS, Patient Claim Line and Blume, and its charitable arm, Fletchers Foundation.

Fletchers Group’s mission is to help rebuild the lives of people who have suffered serious, life-changing injuries and for them to have the very best possible life after injury. It does this, not only through the case work it undertakes for injured clients, but also through supporting charities, causes and organisations that share the same mission.

Why is sustainability important to Fletchers Group?

At Fletchers Group, we believe we have a responsibility to our people, our communities, and our planet.

That is why in May 2022, we signed off a new three-year responsible business strategy. The strategy brings together our community work (Community), environmental agenda (Environment), and diversity targets (Our People) under one strategy with ambitious targets we are confident we can hit.

As one of the UK’s most trusted and respected law companies, we recognise the importance of conducting our business in a responsible and sustainable way. In the last 12 months, we have worked tirelessly to deliver the key elements of our responsible business strategy.

Our aspiration, in line with our core values, is to be recognised as a leading responsible business in the legal sector.

Our programme is far-reaching and varied. But it is strategic too, with an overarching objective to ‘help people thrive’. And by ‘people’, we refer to our own colleagues; as well as our clients, our communities; and ultimately, those who need our support – nationwide.

Through our work, we strive to improve the well-being of those around us. Whether that is emotionally, physically or through charitable partnerships to support ground-breaking research, community incentives or patient recovery.

Why did Fletchers Group decide to collaborate with Play It Green?

It was a no-brainer for us to work with Play It Green who share our ethos around sustainability and responsible business in general.

As we’re early in our sustainability journey, we needed support, of which Play It Green and Catalyst have provided that and more.

We’re proud to have implemented a clear and ambitious strategy to address the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues which are material to our business and stakeholders. This is supported by a strong culture that helps colleagues make the right choices daily. We felt that Play It Green would be a perfect collaboration partner to help us on our way in achieving these goals.

We endeavour to align with companies, people, groups and charities that share the same common goals and ethos.  The opportunity to rebalance our carbon emissions (for the first time) was an extremely important step for us. We echo the Play It Green values of conducting business in the right way, and were delighted to collaborate with them as we continue to dedicate time and resource to good causes.

In terms of your Responsible Business plan, what is the big focus now and moving forward?

As the business grows, we’ve undergone a year of significant change in our business and faced a wide range of challenges and opportunities. Throughout it all, however, we have remained focused on the development of sustainable business practices.

We’re now in year three of a three-year strategy, and this year will be heavily focused on sustainability. We’re due to undergo a more in-depth audit of our Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions, with the intention in 2025, publicly launching our Net-Zero Strategy.

In the meantime, however, we are focusing on sustainable changes to our offices that can be made quickly, as well as tailoring our community support to local environmental projects.

For instance, colleagues recently chose two hospital gardens to receive charitable funding. We will also have a big presence at this year’s Southport Flower show, after which we will be donating our garden to a local charity.

What does the future hold for Fletchers Group?

In 2024 and the years to come, we will continue to support our clients, our people, and our communities.

We’ll do this by advocating equity, diversity, and inclusion, integrating sustainability into every aspect of our business. As well as this we will be embracing new technologies such as AI to improve access to justice and reduce our impact on the environment.

As we grow, we will be ensuring we do this responsibly and sustainably. Our new Responsible Business strategy launches in 2025, mirroring our strategic business objectives.

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made so far across our responsible business strategy and we understand there is much more to do, but we are absolutely ready for the challenge!
